OUR MISSION

Taping The World for Health

History and Background

Kinesio cannot be understood without understanding our story. Dr. Kenzo Kase developed the Kinesio Taping Method in the 1970s to fill a void in the treatment options that were available at that time. He was searching for a way to facilitate the body’s natural healing process and prolong the benefits of his treatment after his patients left his clinic. Through his education as a chiropractor, his innate ability to sense internal pain and dysfunction through the skin and his creative therapeutic mind, Dr. Kase was able to develop new methods of treating his diagnoses. Among these methods, Kinesio Taping was born.

The Kinesio Taping Method has two very important elements: the education and the tool. Kinesio Taping has never been (and never will be) a one-size fits all philosophy. Knowing how to apply the tape is instrumental in an application’s success, and this is highlighted in the globally recognized education and certification program. Today Kinesio University approved seminars and courses are offered in more than thirty countries across the globe. In 2014 alone more than 1,000 approved programs were hosted, training tens of thousands of practitioners worldwide.

The KTAI is the certification and membership organization, providing accreditation to those who successfully complete our education programs. Those letters “CKTP” after a name ensure confidence that the practitioner has undergone the necessary training to integrate Kinesio Taping in to their practice. KTAI also promotes scientific research. Dr. Kase invented the Kinesio Taping Method long before science and the rest of the world was ready. 35 years later science is still catching up, but growing evidence is emerging to support what Dr. Kase learned years ago simply by listening to the body and utilizing its natural healing processes.

No matter how high the level of education or how knowledgeable the user, every treatment modality requires a tool. The only tool specifically designed and tested to meet the unique requirements of the Kinesio Taping Method is Kinesio Tex Tape. Developed and manufactured by Kinesio Holding Corporation, you can trust in our products to achieve consistent results in combination with the Method developed by Dr. Kase.

WHO WE ARE

Kinesio is a group of three organizations dedicated to the Kinesio Taping® Method: Kinesio University™, Kinesio Taping® Association International (KTAI) and Kinesio® Holding Corporation (KHC). The collaboration of these three companies ensures representation for the Method across all realms of the therapeutic world. Together, we have one vision: ‘Tape the World for Health’.

After developing and refining the Kinesio Taping Method in the late 1970s, his innovation sparked interest throughout the health care community. It wasn’t long before Dr. Kase was asked to share his findings and to provide information so other practitioners could extend the benefits to their own patients. From the very beginning, Dr. Kase grasped the importance of having a community of practitioners and instructors to share their progress and provide a standard for the use of the newly-developing Kinesio Taping Method.

What is the Kinesio Taping Method?

The Kinesio Taping® Method is a therapeutic taping technique which alleviates pain and facilitates lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. This lifting affect forms convolutions in the skin increasing interstitial space and allowing for decreased inflammation in affected areas. Based upon research and years of clinical use, The Kinesio® Taping Method specifically applies Kinesio tape based on evaluation and assessment to dictate a specific application.

WHAT IS KINESIO TAPE?

Kinesio Tape®, also called Kinesio Tex Tape, is the original elastic adhesive tape developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in 1979. Kinesio Tape is latex-free, hypoallergenic and wearable for days at a time. It is safe for populations from elite athletes, weekend warriors to geriatric and pediatric patients.

KInesio Tape fibers are designed to stretch longitudinally up to 40 to 60% of it resting length.

Kinesio Taping has never been (and never will be) a one-size fits all philosophy.

The Kinesio® Taping Method is designed to guide the body toward homeostasis.

KINESIO’s President & Founder

Dr. Kenzo Kase was born in Japan in the early 1940s. He was a sickly child, not allowed to attend physical education classes because of this physical frailty. He was plagued by pneumonia, tuberculosis, kidney infections and all kinds of allergies. His grandmother was a Japanese healer who used herbal remedies, acupuncture and moxibustion techniques, and he learned the value of a healing touch.

After graduating from chiropractic college in Chicago, he was able to combine his education in both mainstream and traditional medical techniques and philosophies. Through his own experiences and training, Dr. Kase was never forced to separate different styles and methods of healing. His licensing is in chiropractic and acupuncture, but his medical knowledge is both deeper and broader.
